Community Activities Volunteer

Within the Heart of Each Community, Everyone Belongs.

We all want a chance to learn, grow, have fun, contribute and share our talents with others, don't we? We look forward to seeing a good movie, taking in a ballgame, having dinner with friends, maybe attending a concert or play. People with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities share our enjoyment of these activities. They want and deserve the same opportunities, but so often the opportunities are not there.

The Board of DD's community activities provide the support and bridges the gap so that people with DD can have an equal opportunity to enjoy community life. These activities help individuals with DD become actively involved in their communities and increases their sense of belonging.

YOU are the key to these activities. By becoming a volunteer, you can provide the support that will help individuals with DD participate more fully in their community.

We train all community activities volunteers. The time commitment is very flexible. Our staff will provide as much or as little support as you need. There are opportunities to volunteer during the daytime, after work, in the evening and on the weekend. Here are just a few of the ways you can help:

Take part in sports and fitness programs

Exercising with someone else is always more fun! And more motivating. Get someone started on a workout routine. Coach a sport or get involved in Unified Sports. A Unified Sport involves teams comprised of people with and without disabilities.

Explore your community

Work with an individual or within a small group of individuals and fellow volunteers. Together, enjoy community events or visits to a mall, the zoo or theater performances. Maybe you'd prefer to take a class together. How about ceramics, cooking or golf? We develop programs to match people with similar interests for socializing and fun.

Give someone a ride

Many individuals can't take part in programs and events in their community because they don't have a way to get there. Driving someone to an event, program or activity can open up an exciting new world for him or her.

Plan activities, events and programs

Help our staff and other volunteers plan special events and programs. These groups guide and support community activities by forging valuable community connections.

Teach others

Share a skill or talent with a group of people by teaching a class or co-teaching with another volunteer.

Share the gift of friendship

Spend some time with an individual who needs companionship. Do the things friends do: call one another on the phone, visit at home or venture out to the park, the movies or for ice cream. The amount of time you spend is flexible and you and your new friend can determine the places that you go.

We also need volunteers to assist with these programs:

  • Bowling
  • Hiking
  • Rollerskating
  • Bocce
  • Ceramics
  • Weightlifting
  • Social clubs
  • Volleyball
  • Dinner groups
  • Woodworking
  • Theater and drama
  • Arts and crafts
  • Book clubs

There are many opportunities like these throught Cuyahoga County.
