Universal changing table in restroom

Awarding $102,000 for Universal Changing Tables

It’s not just a scary October story that many people cannot use typical public restrooms and lack options for toileting away from home.

It’s the reality for adults with developmental disabilities who require diaper changing or colostomy and catheter care.

This is why Cuyahoga DD advocates for universal changing tables.

Universal changing tables are adult-sized changing tables for equitable bathroom access.

Increasing the number of adult-sized changing tables available in Cuyahoga County is important for several reasons:

  • First, it gives people with disabilities or other medical needs require a safe, private space to take care of their restroom needs.
  • Second, it makes public spaces more accessible, and it helps people with disabilities participate more in their communities.
  • Third, it is easier on caregivers to know there is an adult changing table where they are going instead of having to leave the event or place when they have to address a restroom need.

This year, Cuyahoga DD invested over $100,000 for Universal Changing Table Grants, to install 11 new universal changing tables throughout the county at:

  • Achievement Centers for Children
  • City of Seven Hills Community Recreation Center
  • Cleveland Public Library: Main Library
  • East Cleveland Public Library
  • Euclid Public Library
  • HELP Foundation, Inc.
  • MMS Adult Day Center
  • North Olmsted Recreation Center
  • Vocational Guidance Services
  • Welcome House, Inc.
  • Westlake Porter Public Library

Organizations that install universal changing tables ensure their spaces are accessible and welcoming to everyone in the community.
